HERNIATED DISC FAQS

Experiencing back pain coupled with muscle weakness? Have you considered your problem may be a herniated disc? If so, you may have several questions like what is a herniated disc, if you have one what caused it, and how can a chiropractor help? These are all great questions, if you’re in the Beverly Hills, FL area, Chaney Chiropractic Clinic is ready to assist you.

What Is a Herniated Disc?

Each vertebra in the spine is cushioned by a disc. If that disc is injured, the soft substance that makes up the disc can begin to slip outside of its outer casing. This causes the disc to press on the nerve in your spine, causing pain, immobility, and other complications.

What Causes a Herniated Disc?

Abnormal pressure, movement, and injuries to the spine can cause a herniated disc. So can bad posture or sitting too much over long periods. However, herniated discs are more often than not caused by acute injuries like being involved in a car accident, slipping on ice, or getting injured in a contact sport like football or hockey.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms?

It is possible to have a herniated disc and experience no symptoms. However, those with herniated discs will typically experience the following:

  • Numbness and tingling in the back, shoulder, and/or arms
  • Weakness in one arm
  • Back or neck pain
  • Tenderness with no apparent cause
  • Muscle spasms and abnormal weakness for your age
